Snow cover dynamics: an overlooked yet important feature of winter bird occurrence and abundance across the United States

چکیده

Snow cover dynamics (i.e. depth, duration and variability) are dominant drivers of ecological processes during winter. For overwintering species, changes gradients in snow may impact survival population (e.g. facilitating via thermal refugia or limiting reduced resource acquisition). However, rarely used species distribution modelling, especially for birds. Currently, we lack understanding how affect bird distributions which functional traits drive these associations at regional continental scales. Using observations from eBird, a global community science network, explored the effects on patterns occurrence counts 150 species. We quantified relative importance, species-specific responses trait-based relationships abundance to ecologically relevant across United States. were important environmental predictors models, ranking within top three most (> 90%) count 79%) contiguous Species exhibited gradient association avoidance, yet birds limited by long, persistent seasons. Duration winter percent frozen ground without structured eastern USA, whereas variability was stronger driver western USA. Birds associated with seasons had greater dispersal capacity dietary diversity, inhabiting regions variable generally habitat generalists. Our results suggest that various filters Global climate change is rapidly degrading key characteristics seasonal cover. A changing cryosphere elicit distributional many birds, potentially accelerating range shifts novel assemblages.

Demographic and Socioeconomic Determinants of Physical and Mental Self-rated Health Across 10 Ethnic Groups in the United States

Background and aims: The aim of this study was to explore ethnic differences in demographic and socioeconomic determinants of poor physical and mental self-rated health (SRH) in the United States. Methods: We used data from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (CPES) 2001- 2003, which included a national household probability sample of 18237 individuals including 520 Vietnamese, 5...

Snow occurrence changes over the central and eastern United States under future warming scenarios

Changes of snow occurrence across the central and eastern United States under future warming for the late 21(st) century are investigated by applying an empirical hyperbolic tangent function to both observed and downscaled high spatial resolution (~12.5 km) daily temperature and precipitation, to compare the historical (1981-2000) and future (2081-2100) snow occurrence. The observed distributio...

Snow cover and extreme winter warming events control flower abundance of some, but not all species in high arctic Svalbard

The High Arctic winter is expected to be altered through ongoing and future climate change. Winter precipitation and snow depth are projected to increase and melt out dates change accordingly. Also, snow cover and depth will play an important role in protecting plant canopy from increasingly more frequent extreme winter warming events. Flower production of many Arctic plants is dependent on mel...

Spatial and Temporal Variability in Winter Precipitation across the Western United States during the Satellite Era

The western United States is known for its water shortages due to large seasonal and inter-annual variability of precipitation as well as increasing demand. Climate change will impact the availability of water in the western United States through the modification of precipitation characteristics. Satellite data presents the opportunity to study these changes at a fine, continuous spatial resolu...
